Monthly Newsletter for October 2024

A Message From Your Administrators

While it appears it will be a sunny start to the month, we are definitely noticing a shift in temperatures that alerts us that fall has officially arrived! While our feelings may be mixed about the declining temperatures, we all look ahead to the month of October and its school-based activities with excitement!

Homecoming will be celebrated throughout the week of October 7th-12th. Students will have the opportunity to dress up for spirit days on Monday through Friday. On Wednesday the school’s student variety show, Hootenanny, is sure to reveal students’ hidden gifts and talents. We’ll host a tailgate before the football game on Friday evening and, of course, students will participate in the annual powder toss during the gam. On Saturday night, the Homecoming Dance, “A Night on the Red Carpet” will take place, giving students a chance to dress up and celebrate being OHHS students together! It will be a fun-filled, colorful, and exhilarating week!

As we near second trimester (which begins December 8, 2024), we are looking forward to an exciting development in our English Department. Starting in December, English teachers will begin the process of piloting new material for grades 9 through 11. Student and parent input is a valuable part of this process. Please read more about the chance to participate in curriculum selection here.

In this newsletter, we’ve made mention of sports and student talents. We highly encourage students to explore the wide variety of extracurricular clubs and activities we offer at OHHS. Involvement in school-based activities is extraordinarily beneficial for students. Among other things, it expands students’ ability to build relationships, bolsters personal growth, cultivates character development, and has a positive effect on academic performance. We hope all of our students will take advantage of all OHHS has to offer. Find a list of our multitudinous clubs here.

Finally, as we look ahead to the day people most associate with October, Halloween, we would like to make certain that students’ celebratory moods are not squashed by any surprises. OHHS does have a policy surrounding wearing costumes to school, and it will be enforced on Halloween day:

  • Please be certain that your costume meets our dress code and provides you with the appropriate bodily coverage.

  • Faces must always be visible and recognizable, no masks may be worn.

  • Do not wear or bring inflatable costumes to school.

  • Costumes that conceal a person's identity or are disruptive in nature and/or props will not be allowed; No weapons, real or fake.

We are grateful to have the chance to work with our students every day, as well as for the support of parents, guardians, and community members! We are looking forward to the PRIDE-filled (Purpose, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Empathy) month ahead!

Federal Impact Aid Survey Information

The Federal Impact Aid Program Survey will be sent to parents/guardians through ParentSquare on October 1. Only one parent/guardian needs to complete the information and a survey for each student is required. This information is vital because it determines how much Impact Aid funding Oak Harbor Public Schools receives from the federal government.

The Federal Impact Aid Law was passed to help make up for lost tax revenue to local districts due to non-taxable federal property in their boundaries. The amount of Impact Aid we receive is determined by the actual number of our students with parents who live or work on NAS Whidbey Island or other federal property, including Native American lands and our schools on federal property: Crescent Harbor, HomeConnection, and Hand-in-Hand. About half of our students meet these criteria. To qualify for funding, we need a completed survey for every student attending our district.
