December 3, 2024
Dear OHHS Students and Families,
We are excited to share some news about a burgeoning change that we believe will have a positive impact on our students' learning and engagement in the area of English/Language Arts.
Beginning Second Trimester, several of our English classes will be piloting the first of two new and innovative literacy curricula options for grades 9-11. It has been many years since the English Department has had the opportunity to explore and fully utilize brand new curriculum in a unified way. Ultimately, data, student input, parent input, and teacher feedback will allow the department to determine which curriculum best serves the needs of Oak Harbor students.
During Second Trimester participating English classes will be piloting the use of HMH Into Literature. Students enrolled English 9-11 during the Third Trimester may have the opportunity explore English through StudySync. Each curriculum comes with unique materials, online resources, and embedded teaching tools. These products, along with student engagement and outcomes, will be taken into consideration as we move into the review and adoption process in the spring of 2025. To learn more about the curriculum review process, please check out Board Policy and Procedure 2020.
We understand that you may have questions or wish for further clarification about the curriculum pilot process. In this regard, we encourage you to reach out to your student’s English teacher, Associate Principal, Katrina Riippa, or Director of Teaching and Learning, Liz Ritz. Our team will be more than happy to address any inquiries you may have and engage in further dialogue about the process, materials, and intended outcomes.
We value the Oak Harbor community’s interest and investments in education, and we believe that the adoption of a new, aligned, research-informed curriculum will contribute significantly to students’ academic growth and learning experience. Your feedback and support are crucial as we move through this exciting pilot process. Materials from both curricula will be available to review in-person in the OHHS SUB on March 31, 2025. More details will be forthcoming.
Thank you for your support throughout this important curriculum review process. We look forward to working together to create the best possible school experiences for the students we share as #oneoakharbor.
Sincerely,
The OHHS Admin Team
